Langley Junction (up) - Langley South Junction (via up Hertford spur) (24) YA02
[note: accessible only from Stevenage platform 1]
Up trains to the Hertford North line from points north of Stevenage including all Up through trains between Stevenage and Kings Cross when diverted via Hertford North for engineering work; trains via Hertford North starting at Stevenage normally run via the down, reversible, spur. Check locally for the occasional exception.
Although the operator's stated aspiration is to increase off-peak service between Hertford North and Stevenage, non-provision of a planned additional turn-back platform at Stevenage precludes this, so most services north of Watton-at-Stone will instead be replaced by bus from May 2019 until at least 2021 under proposals published for public consultation in June/July 2017 by operator GTR. Rail service between Moorgate, Hertford North and Watton-at-Stone will be retained. The consultation document implied that there may still be restricted - presumably peak hour - services over the Watton-at-Stone to Stevenage section. Therefore, this entry (and the line between Langley Junction and Watton-at-Stone) must be expected to have a limited (or nil, apart from diversions) service from May 2019.

Stone Junction - Colwich Junction (67) CB03
Trains between Stoke-on-Trent and Euston not shown to call at Stafford use the direct line

Little Bridgeford Junction - Heamies Bridge (65) CB03
The Up and Down Fast lines and the Up Slow line follow their established route through Norton Bridge but the Down Slow line is segregated - via Searchlight Lane Junction - on a separate alignment to the west (there is no "junction" at Heamies Bridge where the Down Slow rejoins its old alignment). At Stafford, if the signal at the Down end of platforms 1, 3, 4 or 6 shows a "clear" aspect with route indication "S" (or platform 5 shows a "clear" aspect with no "feather") this indicates use of Down Slow line - a train running direct to Crewe would then use this route. Trains booked to use the Down Slow line are:

Regular but infrequent services

In each case, check with the railway concerned near the potential date of operation
and note that some of these lines may also be used on other occasions when so advertised.

Briton Ferry, Court Sart Junction / Up Flying Loop Junction - Hendy Junction (Swansea District line)
Excursions from South Wales via this route to The Royal Welsh Show, held near Builth each year in late July
2018 dates: 23 - 26 July
Schedule : 1Z37 0714 MTWThO Cardiff Central - Builth Road and 1Z38 1845 return
Information - in July - from 0845 6061 660, by email or at their website.

Aylesbury Vale Junction - Quainton Road
On Spring and August Bank Holiday Mondays a shuttle service of trains between Aylesbury and Quainton Road uses this section when so advertised
2018 dates: 7 May, 27 August (subject to confirmation)
Schedule: usually 1035 from Aylesbury and then hourly (except 1335) until 1635, returning 30 mins later but may vary when other Chiltern Railways services are affected by engineering work
Information from 01296 655720, by email or at their website. Or (near the date) at Chiltern Railways webpages: Changes to Train Times

Dublin Connolly (platform 7) - Newcomen Junction
In addition to the scheduled service over this line (see under IRELAND, above), it is used if the route via Drumcondra is blocked. At the conclusion of the All-Ireland Hurling and Football semi-finals and finals, held at Croke Park on Sundays mid-August until mid-September, if the 1643 SuO Pearse - Maynooth or a local special train was held at Drumcondra station to receive passengers after a match, A908 1705 SuO Connolly - Sligo was in consequence diverted via this route to overtake. From Sunday 10 September 2018, the 1705 SuO Connolly - Sligo was retimed to 1710 and booked to call at Drumcondra so that the All-Ireland Football Finals on 3 September 2018 would have been the last such occasion.
Information about the events at the Croke Park website or the IÉ website

The following sections of preserved railways over which no regular public services operate are known to have been used occasionally by special services open to the public. Unless specially noted below, there does not appear to be consistent or regular public use so watch the relevant railways' "events" web pages for possible use:

Moor Road (Leeds) station - Balm Road loop [Middleton Railway]: the railway is authorised to operate passenger trains over this line on a limited number of occasions each year. On two weekends in recent seasons trains have used this section, some trains being freight trains carrying passengers. Information from 0113 2710320, by email or at their website under “Events” - then search for “Balm Road”

Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre - connection with Network Rail [Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society]

Swanwick Junction - end of line at Greenhill [Midland Railway Trust]

Bewdley South Junction - Stourport line stub and Bewdley North - Tenbury line stub [Severn Valley Railway]

Norchard Low Level - Middle Forge Junction ground frame [Dean Forest Railway]: may be used on special events days - particularly on those when separate services are advertised: Norchard (high level) - Parkend and Norchard (low level) - Lydney Junction (although on Thomas days the low level platform is used only for Thomas + brake van shunts). Santa services between Norchard and Parkend usually operate from and to low level platform with reversal at Middle Forge Junction. Regular trains at Norchard use the high level platform on the through line.

Dereham - Hoe Road [Mid Norfolk Railway]

Long(ue)ville Junction - Fletton Junction [Nene Valley Railway]

Mangapps Railway Museum Southminster Road branch [Mangapps Railway Museum]

Norton Platform - Bishop's Lydeard [West Somerset Railway]

Horsted Keynes - limit of former line towards Ardingly [Bluebell Railway]

Groombridge Junction (site) - limit of former line towards Ashurst Junction [Spa Valley Railway] (facility not available after August 2018 - this entry will be deleted from future editions)

Bodiam - Junction Road and Robertsbridge - Robertsbridge Northbridge Street [Rother Valley Railway] (presently out of use until further notice)

Goosefield Sidings - Haven Street [Isle of Wight Steam Railway]

Llangollen Goods Junction - Pentrefelin Sidings gate and to former Goods yard (Diesel road) [Llangollen Railway - look for September Diesel Weekend brake van trips]

Downpatrick - Loop Platform - Magnus's Grave (former King Magnus's Halt ("King's Halt")) - present end of line towards Ballydugan (Ringreagh) [Downpatrick & County Down Railway]: the use of some part of this line (at least to the Loop Platform) usually applies for their Halloween and Christmas services.

Don't forget that all Sunday trains - and even weekday trains - are subject to further diversion or alteration.
Outline information of forthcoming engineering work is given on most train companies' websites and at the National Rail Future engineering work webpage. Late information may be available through the Gensheet Yahoo! Group
